Today, clever song lyrics charm me. I have a happy springtime crush on clever song lyrics. I want to make a mix of only clever songs. What should be on it? Here’s three I have so far:
Cake: Short Skirt, Long Jacket
She is fast, thorough, and sharp as a tack
She’s touring the facility and picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt,
And a loooooooooooooonnnnnnngggggg, long jacket
Hank Williams: Howling At the Moon
I rode my horse to town to day and a gas pump we did pass
I pulled ’im up and I hollered whoa!, said fill ’im up with gas
The man picked up a monkey wrench and wham!, he changed my tune
You got me chasin’ rabbits, spittin’ out teeth and howlin’ at the moon.
Fiona Apple: Oh Sailor:
Everything good I deem too good to be true
Everything else is just a bore
Everything I have to look forward to
Has a pretty painful and very imposing before

Do you know the Beautiful South? They have an old song called “Song for Whoever”:
I’ll sing you songs till you’re asleep
When you’ve gone upstairs I’ll creep
And write it all down
Oh shirley, oh deborah, oh julie, oh jane
I wrote so many songs about you
I forget your name (I forget your name)
Jennifer, alison, phillipa, sue, deborah, annabel, too
Jennifer, alison, phillipa, sue, deborah, annabel, too
I forget your name
I love your from the bottom of my pencil case
I love the way you never ask me why
I love to write about each wrinkle on your face
And I love you till my fountain pen runs dry
Deep so deep, the number one I hope to reap
Depends upon the tears you weep, so cry, lovey cry, cry, cry, cry
Oh cathy, oh alison, oh phillipa, oh sue
You made me so much money, I wrote this song for you

Tara, I love that song. In fact, The Beautiful South (and their predecessor, The Housemartins) are my favorites for springtime music, and I was just trying to come up with an example of their catchy lyrics when I read your reply.
So how about some Housemartins, “Five Get Over Excited”:
I am Guy from Camden Town
My hair is curly but I gel it down
My clothes are black but my bread is brown
I’m really into early Motown
And my recent favorite lyrics from Gogol Bordello’s “Avenue B”:
Oh, little Sally, my darling
Your panics are charming
Your shopping techniques are amazing
Celebrity, erudition disarming

Tara, I was going to tell you that nerdygirl introduced me to Beautiful South back in high school, but she beat me to it. Thanks for the contributions, ladies.
Kate, TMBG goes without saying.
