Ah, yes, yours is the point made by Annie Dillard in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (which I detested as pretentious and unbelievable and left unfinished). I have bird radar, because I've trained myself to notice through years of birding. But other wildlife... I miss most of it.

Karen-- I think I could get the radar, if I had someone who could teach me how to look and what to look for. For now, I wonder what magnificent creatures I've just passed by.

Sarah-- That rattlesnake story is something! Those Texans sure know how to tell a tale. Note to self: never assume a snake is dead.

kate-- we are sisters in stepping over snakedom. I see on your blog that you've been having some recent close encounters of your own!

Oooh oooh! More foreshadowing! I love it.
Yeah, I've got the same lack of radar as your friend above. I was hiking with three guys one time (I believe two of them were our own Steve Hoffman and Timmy Sparks) when I stepped over a big "root" across the hiking trail. I guess I was in the lead. "Whoa! You're not scared by snakes, huh?" said whichever guy was behind me. Now, when you're not aware that there's a snake around, that's not really a good comment to hear. I had plenty of post-experience heebie-jeebie-ing.

Dottie, I think you should hurry up and post parts three through five...I'm dying of anticipation!

My friend Jasie, who I met at L'Abri, is from Houston. Her dad was recently bit by a rattler and lived to tell the tale -- definitely worth a read: http://jckakes.blogspot.com/2007/05/rattler-tale.html

Wow. A rattler. I'm partly scared, partly jealous. I've never seen one. On my last trip into the wild, I would have missed an antelope and a wild turkey, had not someone with me pointed them out to me. It made me think, "I wonder how much wildlife I've missed out on seeing, just because I don't seem to ever notice them??" Some people have that radar. I'm glad Dr. G does!!!!!!
