You are awesome to keep receipts, tags, etc. I developed a bad habit somewhere along the way of gleefully tearing up the receipt right after I get it. Do I think I'm concealing precious information from dumpster divers? I suppose if I'd keep the things around, there'd be no way for strangers to get at them.
 Silly.

The return policy often can be an affection determining moment for me too. I'm impressed that you seem to go back consistently; I've gotten lazy and often keep a purchase I don't ever use.

I consider myself somewhat of a Nader-esque consumer rights activist when it comes to return policies.

Our latest annoyance: Home Depot. We got hundreds of dollars worth of Home Depot gift cards for our wedding. On one occasion, J went to HD to make some purchases, and realized after he got there that he didn't have the cards with him. The clerk said, "Oh, don't worry -- next time you're here you can just buy a pack of gum or something and cash out the balance on the card." So he proceeded to buy a bunch of stuff and when we were next in the store, we attempted to "cash out" one of the cards...no dice. "We don't do that here." Asked for a manager, who assured us, "We have never done that."
