Right now, cable TV is included with our rent. We are not going to get cable when we move to the new house, and I’m sure it will transform my life. The time I used to spend watching TV will now be devoted to more constructive pursuits, such as poetry writing. And regular times for prayer and reflection. And exercise. Yes, I will be a whole new me. I’ll do all those things plus my online teaching gig, my journal editing gig, and the 5x increase in chores that apparently comes with home ownership. Oh yeah, and traveling, hosting guests, hiking, starting a women’s book club, getting back into pottery making, and finding some artsy friends. (Dr G: “Let the transformation begin!”)
I’m sure all this will work out because of my excellent history of making sweeping, long-lasting personal changes, albeit ones that are invisible to the outside world. Why do you doubt me, fair reader? Pshaw.

I bet you’ll get used to it in no time. We ain’t got no cable, and I don’t mind it a bit. (Though I do occasionally wish for the food network…and when I stay home sick I always wish I could watch Oprah.)

I’m conflicted: I wholeheartedly endorse your transformation, but I didn’t see ‘blogging’ on that list. So what’s a fan of Dottie to do?

Who doubts? I believe wholeheartedly!
(did you intentionally omit ‘become world-class diver in new pool’ on that list?)

As long as you stay true to the “starting a women’s book club” bit, then the rest of it can fall to the wayside, IMHSO*.
I’m sorry; I’m not so artsy as I used to be, or you could possibly accomplish two of your goals in one fell swoop.

A couple of months ago we rebelled against the continual cable rate increases, and took the ultimate BASIC package (only the major networks)- now it takes mere moments to conclude there is nothing worth watching!
It’s a great strategy to remove the temptation to be a couch potato! We do miss a couple of favorites, but it doesn’t take long to realize that we can live without them. Most of what we miss we can get on Netflix at the end of the season, or through streaming video on the Internet, anyway.
P.S. Congrats on the home purchase!

S– We are actually pretty new to cable TV– until two years ago we didn’t even have a television, so I’m expecting the transition back will not be TOO bad. Though I’m sad about missing Project Runway. And the Colbert Report.
M– almost all of those things on the list are NEW activities, which will conceivably happen concurrently with my OLD activities. I’ll have to assess after a few months.
K– I already achieved world-class diver status, in my imagination, in elementary school. Otherwise it would totally be on there.
KJ– That cordoning off the dirty parts of the house thing might just make the book club possible.
AB– Thanks for the testimonial! I’m looking forward to not having to spend an hour to figure out nothing good is on.
