Karen-- you qualify because you care! ; )
Steve-- okay, you can be that. i was thinking that nearly all of the labels I listed, with a few exceptions, could be applied to me in some form or fashion.

One label I recently came across that got me thinking was "Conservative Democrat" You can be pro-life but also pro universal healthcare. You can be Christian and an enviromentalist at the same time. I think I'll be a conservative democrat for a while.

I think you're right. I do think that: "people associate those labels with the most extreme ideas within those categories" and "Some, if not many, environmentalists are motivated in their efforts at conservation by philosophies which are not Christian and in fact may be antithetical to Christianity."

I think you might be too generous in your estimation of my environmental efforts, though. I was reading the paper (yesterday's) and Macy's had a big ad touting nine ways it thought we all could "turn over a new leaf" in conservation efforts. I regularly do only three of them. Not that I'm accountable to Macy's... ;)

Right now, I think my desires and intentions are greater than any actual conservation/environmentalism fruit. I fantasize about living off the grid, with an organic garden patch and a few sheep, which I would personally shear and card and spin the wool. :D But, for right now, I live in a spot where I have to drive everywhere in my SUV, being 3+ miles from the nearest grocery store, and I'm sure my carbon footprint, if I were interested in measuring it (I'm not) would be ginormous.

So... all that to say, while I do agree with my reluctance to accept a label of "environmentalist" based on your above stated reasons, I also simply don't think I qualify.

And, no, I'm not even going to attempt one-sentence definitions to your list. That's a can o' worms, for sure.

Good post, though.
